01. stage at 11/09/2012 from Berlin to Berlin-Wannsee, (day: 63km / overall.: 63km)
At 8am the start was scheduled. At 6am we went for breakfast. It was no surprise that 90% of the runners were in time for the breakfast. The breakfast was organised as a standard hotel breakfast. Followed by the breakfast we packed our luggage and brought it to the lorry. It transported all luggage to the finish line. Just before 8am the organisator Alexander von Uleniecki and the official head Michael Cramer had some welcome words. They told in a few words about the background of the race. It was set up first time in 2011 for the 50 year “build up the wall” anniversary. The race was beside the old wall line between west and east Berlin and is 170km long. Finally, just past 8am 71 runners started. The first 15k of the course where going all through Berlin city. Then it got quiet. It had less traffic lights and less street crossings. Therefore we ran a long time on a biking path beside the highway. After the start the whole field started very fast. The winner of last edition Karl Berndschrot, Sören Schramm, Thomas Herget and I ran together for the first 10k. Then Thomas and I ran away. The course was very varied. There were small paths through the woods and fields. Thomas and I ran together for the first 25k. Then I went away slowly. During the last 10k I slowed down a bit as well. On the last 20k I passed a lot of paths I knew. I had walked them at my IVV walks before. The finish was not far away from the train station Wannsee. Also tonight we slept at a youth hostel. This time it was not a two bed room, but a four bed room. After dinner we had a briefing for the second race day, the award ceremony for this day and finally the presentation of Michael Cramer. It was planned for Thursday night, but had to be switched shortly. The droppout rate was horrible. Already after the first day ten runners stopped.
