South German championship 100 km at Leipzig, Germany

Friday afternoon. The best time to arrive for a 100 km race. Especially because the start is at 6am on Saturday. Because of the arriving time it is possible to see some of the runners at the pasta party. An opportunity to have small talks, change news and meet some new friends. Against a small amount of money it is possible to sleep at the gymnasium. And if necessary, there are some field beds, too. At Saturday morning there is breakfast at the restaurant of the sport area.

The early starts for the 50 km and 100 km (South German, Bavarian and Saxony championship) have mostly advantages. The main advantage is that runners finished the first kilometres at the cool time of the day. Therefore the finisher ceremony is not too late. The 100 km runners have to run ten times a 10 km loop and the 50 km runners five times this loop. The loop has a long reverse part. After the runners left the stadium they run till km 3.5 on this part. After this there is a small loop around the Auenlake. Because of the long reverse part runners see other runners most of the time. So you do not feel lonely. The course was changing between small trails in the woods and street. There were also some small ground waves, because of the bridges. There were three food and drink areas. One was at the start area and one was at the reverse part, why it was calculated like two. Moreover there were three drinking areas. So nobody was thinking about dehydrating. Over all – The loop was very varied and nice to run.

The weather was quiet good. It was cloudy and had 17°C (62,5 F). At the time the sun came out, the temperature climed immediately. At the early afternoon there were some short shower. There are some of you which things that this weather is not as good. But to have mass of rain the hole day, like friends told me about this day, would not be better.
