50km German Championship at Marburg, Germany

Saturday morning. Because the 50km race in Marburg starts at 10am, it is enough to arrive at the morning. There are two hours of travelling, which we used for some small talks.

The even arrived in Marburg when we met the first friends. After we took our race numbers, we went to the canteen. There we took a coffee and had some small talks. Around 930am we went to the gymnasium to dress up for the race. Before 10am all runners went to the starting line. The head of the DUV, Volkmar Mühl, welcomed all the runners. Especially the German champions at 50km and 100km. Also the German Champion at the cross-country running and the 24-hour-race. It is not the normal way, that the champions of categories of ultra running take part at the same event. Just this constellation should guarantee an interesting race. At 10am there was the start for 25km, Marathon and 50km. At the start of the race Jürgen Kümpel was leading. Behind him was Michael Sommers und Michael Becker. All three were running a very fast speed. But it was not a day to run best times, because of the weather. There was 39-46F (4-8°C) with wind and some rain. The good thing was, that we just got a few raindrops. The wind on the other hand, was very tuff. Especially the first 4km were effected by the wind. At the course there were three aid stations and one at the starting and finishing area. Although Jürgen Kümpel was leading most of the time, Michael Sommers won the race. I was happy to finish at fifth place together with René Stroßny and Jens Lukas.
