100km German Champion Ship in Kandel, Germany

On Friday noon Georg and I met up at the train station of Bittigheim-Bissingen. It was close to my work and already on half way to Kandel. Breaking old traditions, my wife did not join this time due to other appointments. After about two hours of driving, we arrived at the stadium in Kandel. We picked up our race numbers and continued to go to our accommodation. It was located in Oberhausen, roughly 10km away. We brought everything to the rooms and then went for dinner. On the way to our car we met already some more guests. And what a surprise – also runners. After having dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant we did the final preparations for the race and went to bed.

Of cause there was no breakfast from the hotel available at the next morning. But as they said when we got our running bids, it will be available at the start area. So, even they offered a breakfast buffet, I only got a coffee and a peace of cake. This was enough for me, since I am not someone having big breakfasts anyway. Especially, not before having a race. Just before the start was a welcome speech and then, finally, the start. From beginning on, the leaders speeded away fast, but also the rest of the runners could follow the race. The reason was the way the course was set up. It had quiet a few go and return parts. In addition there was one loop in the stadium. If this was done, there was a go and return way for about 300m. After there was a long loop through the wetlands. In the end was a water station and after another 200m part to a turn around point. On the way back we passed the water station again, then back to the first go and return way until we reached the stadium again. There was also another aid station, just after the time measuring mats. After the official aid station, runners can have their private support. This area was almost till the end of the stadium loop. Unfortunately, the official support war quiet rare. AT the beginning there was only water, iso and coke. After about 1,5hours they also offered tea. But it took a while till it was cold enough to drink. Until it was cool enough, I cooled it myself by mixing with some water. For eating they offered a bit more variety, even some cereals.

The mens race started fast from beginning on. It seemed to get a very interesting race, since the first three ran for an final time less than 7 hours. As for the rest of the runners in the field it was weakening after a few hours. Gernot and I started together quick, but not too fast. After the second loop we caught up with the leading woman. It was her first 100km race and, as before at the 6h-German-championship this year, she leaded superior with constant speed till the end. While Gernot slowed down a bit after the third loop, I was continuing with her till the ninth loop. After I had to get into the bushes shortly. When I came back on the course, I already recognized that my energy was somehow gone and I had a strange feeling. I slowed down a bit and continued. From this moment on, I was not really getting back into the race and I knew that I would not make the finishing time of 8:25 I wanted. This even my speed was pointing on a sub 8h during the first half. Still I was catching up one after the other in ranging. As I heard later, many runners had problems with the chilly temperatures at the morning and warm temperatures after. Even I had to go a few more times to the toilet, I was sure to finish under 9h, which would be still OK for me. But my fate wanted different. When I started for the final loop, my stomach got bad and changed my plans. Just because of this I lost another 20 min and lost a few placements in ranking. Nevertheless, in the end it was still enough to get second place in my age group.

After the race I took a short break for recover and then went to shower. Not long after Georg arrived. He also took a shower and then we where sitting together to chat a bit. But we could not stay too long, since we still had a few hours of driving. Before we started on the way home, we heard that around 20 people dropped out and there where less than 80 starters.
